HOW TO PLAY

textZing is a fast-paced word placement game where the faster you play, the more tiles you use per turn, and the more words you make per turn, the more points you earn.

The whole game takes just 3 - 6 minutes to play.

All the letters for the game are taken from an inspirational quote that will be revealed when you complete your first game. The quote and therefore the game changes every day.

Daily Game

Every player receives the exact same letters in the exact same order for that day's game. Because every play-through uses the same letter sequence, you can replay the game to improve your own score or compare scores with other players, knowing everyone faced the exact same challenge.

Basic Rules

  • Your first play may begin anywhere on the empty board.
  • Every later play must connect to at least one previously played tile.
  • All new words formed must be valid dictionary words.
  • All tiles played during a turn must form one continuous horizontal or vertical line.
  • Whenever your current play forms one or more valid words, every valid word will be outlined in green and the Submit button will turn green. Press the submit button to take that turn and score your play.
  • If your current play contains one or more invalid words, no green outlines will appear and the Submit button will remain grey.
  • If there are no more moves where a valid word can be made, the game will automatically end. So if you are stuck and the game hasn't ended, keep looking - there is a move you can make. Or you can end the game at any time by hitting the END GAME button at the top of the screen.

Game Board

  • Board: Drag tiles onto the board to build valid English words.
  • Rack: Your active tiles. You can rearrange the letters however you would like on the rack at any time. New letters always appear on the left side of the rack at the beginning of each turn.
  • Timer: Each turn has a 60-second scoring timer. The faster you submit your play, the more valuable every tile placed that turn becomes. You can still play after the timer runs out, but you will not receive the Time Bonus score for those tiles (see below).
  • Scramble: Randomly rearranges the tiles in the rack.
  • Recall: Returns all unsubmitted tiles from the board back to the rack.
  • Submit: Scores your play and refills your rack.
  • End Game: Press this button to end the game at any time.

You can zoom in, zoom out, and pan the board in any direction using standard touchscreen gestures or mouse controls to comfortably view any part of the game board.

To place a tile, drag it from the rack onto the board. After the first two tiles establish a direction of play, tapping a rack letter auto-places it at the next open square to the right of the last tile played if the direction of play is a row, or the next open square directly below the last tile played if the direction of play is a column. If you change your mind, simply tap a tile on the board to return it to the rack or hit the RECALL button to return all placed tiles to the rack.

Scoring

Every tile you play receives a permanent point value based on two factors: Time Bonus and Tile Bonus.

1. Time Bonus

The faster you submit your turn, the larger the time bonus applied to every tile played that turn.

Submit TimeTime Bonus
0–6 seconds+10
6–12 seconds+9
12–18 seconds+8
18–24 seconds+7
24–30 seconds+6
30–36 seconds+5
36–42 seconds+4
42–48 seconds+3
48–54 seconds+2
54–60 seconds+1
Over 60 seconds+0

2. Tile Bonus

Each tile also receives a bonus equal to the number of tiles you played that turn.

  • Play 1 tile → +1 point per tile
  • Play 2 tiles → +2 points per tile
  • ...
  • Play 7 tiles → +7 points per tile

Even if you submit after 60 seconds, your tiles still receive the tile bonus based on the number of tiles played that turn—they simply receive no time bonus.

Example

If you play a 4-letter word in under 6 seconds, every tile you placed receives:

  • 10-point time bonus
  • 4-point tile bonus

Each of those four tiles is permanently worth 14 points for the remainder of the game.

Once a tile is played, its point value never changes.

Turn Scoring

At the end of each turn:

  • Every newly created legal word is scored.
  • Each word receives the total value of all tiles in that word, including tiles played in previous turns that the new word uses.
  • If a tile belongs to multiple new words, it scores once for each of those words.
  • Your turn score is the sum of all new words created that turn.

Heat Map Strategy

Every played tile changes color based on its permanent value.

  • Deep red = highest-value tile
  • Orange = medium-value tile
  • Light yellow = lower-value tile

Because previously played tiles score again whenever they become part of a newly formed word, it is often advantageous to build new words around your darkest, highest-value tiles to maximize your score.

Have fun!
